Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I hear the audio pronunciations?
Make sure that your headphones are plugged in all the way, and that the volume is turned up. Because navigation through SylviusVG, iPod Edition requires frequent use of the scroll wheel, you may have accidentally turned the volume all the way down.
How do I select "view", "pronounce", or a related term while reading a definition?
You can navigate to any underlined word or phrase while reading a definition by using the iPod scroll wheel. Navigating to "view" or "pronounce" and clicking the center button will allow you hear an audio pronunciation of a term and/or view a related image.
When I'm listening to my iPod in shuffle mode, sometimes an audio pronunciation file is played. How do I get my iPod to skip over them?
In iTunes, select all of the Sylvius audio files and then choose File -> Get Info from the iTunes menu bar (or command-i on Mac, ctrl-i on Windows). In the new window that opens, select the "Options" tab. Check the checkbox labeled "Skip when shuffling" and press the "OK" button to close the window. If you perform this action on the Sylvius files in your iTunes library, you will need to copy the files to your iPod to save the changes. If you perform this action on the Sylvius files on your iPod, you're all done.
Why does the audio keep playing after the term is pronounced?
The audio files have been padded with 6 seconds of silence to allow you time to view the image when you select "view". While viewing an image, to see a larger version of the image, press "pause", "center-click", "center-click".
Can I use Sylvius on my black and white iPod or my iPod Shuffle?
We do not support Sylvius on your black and white iPod. In some cases, you may be able to install Sylvius on your black and white iPod, but you will not see any images. You will only be able to read definitions and listen to audio pronunciations for the Sylvius terms. We do not recommend installing Sylvius on your iPod Shuffle.
What does "Notes Loading" mean and why does it take so long?
When you first use your iPod after synching it with iTunes, you may see a message that says "Notes Loading." This happens because your iPod is indexing all of your notes and making sure they are up-to-date. It may take a minute or two due to the large amount of detailed content in Sylvius.
Can I still put my own notes in my iPod?
Your iPod can support up to 1000 notes. Sylvius currently comprises roughly 450 notes, so you will have plenty of room for your own notes or other software that uses the notes feature.
Some of the text labels on the images are too small to read. Why?
Because the Sylvius content is adapted from full-screen versions of these images, a very few images may contain embedded text that you can't read on your iPod. For these images, we recommend consulting Sylvius VG or the glossary at sylvius.com to view the full-size images.
Can I use Sylvius for the iPod in my car, on a bus, on a train, or in a plane?
Yes. Additionally you can use it in your house, with your spouse, while you eat, or with your feet. (Note: Should you wish to stay alive, never use it while you drive.)
