Central gray
Brainstem gray matter surrounding the cerebral aqueduct and rostral fourth ventricle (also called "periaqueductal gray"); contains groups of cells that perform a variety of functions, including modulation of pain transmission in the spinal cord and the regulation of certain visceral motor activities.
