SylviusPRO: 3D Dissector and Atlas of the Human Central Nervous System
S. Mark Williams, Ph.D., Leonard E. White, Ph.D., and Andrew C. Mace
Update available
NOTE: SylviusPRO is currently out of print. It has been replaced by Sylvius 4

Last Release: 3.1
Version 3.1 is a free update for registered users and includes content and performance enhancements. To get it, launch SylviusPRO and click the highlighted "Updates are available" button.
SylviusPRO, like its predecessor Sylvius 2.0, is a unique digital atlas of the human central nervous system. As compared to Sylvius 2.0, SylviusPRO offers the user significantly more neuroanatomical content (approximately 500 structures described) and greater ease of use.
Atlases
  • Surface Anatomy Provides a visual introduction to the location and names of the major external features and subdivisions of the human brain.
    • Photographic Atlas: Digitally enhanced photographic images of a human brain specimen
    • Magnetic resonance image atlas: High resolution 3D reconstructions of a human brain specimen illustrating the major surface features.
    • Brainstem Model: 3D views of a widely used model illustrating the surface features of the brainstem as well as the location of cranial nerve nuclei.
  • Sectional Anatomy Allows the user to explore the internal organization of the brain.
    • Photographic Atlas: allows the student to 'virtually dissect' a human brain specimen in the three standard planes (coronal, axial and sagittal).
    • Magnetic resonance image atlas: High resolution in vivo atlas comprising coronal, axial, and sagittal sections.
    • Brainstem and Spinal Cord: A cross sectional histological atlas of the human spinal cord and brainstem allows students to examine major tracts and nuclei.
  • Pathways Allows students to follow the flow of information in several long-tract pathways of the central nervous system.
  • Index and Reference A searchable index providing a visual representation, brief description and audio pronunciation of major neuroanatomical structures.
Additional features
  • High-resolution color digital images of human brain specimens and sections
  • Zoom feature for detailed inspection of brain images
  • Audio pronunciation of neuroanatomical terms
  • Self quiz mode
  • User-defined preferences
  • Image mark-up tools
  • Image orientation reference
  • View "at a glance" the 3D extent of structures via thumbnail slice navigator
  • View multiple images at once
  • Hierarchical grouping of neuroanatomical structures
  • Notes feature to quickly make annotations
  • Notes can be shared among users or computers using a web browser and Internet connection
SylviusPRO is an excellent resource for medical and allied health students, as well as undergraduate pre-medical and biological psychology students.
